A Pretty Penny

Hello Sisters and Readers!

There are some things in life you wish you could just go out and buy and you secretly pine for them, knowing full-well you may never actually purchase them (not any time soon, at least). The following items are quirky luxuries I keep gravitating toward but just can't bring myself to buy.  Maybe if the price tags were smaller...forget high fashion home decor for now...I have diapers to buy ;)

Fornasetti Pillows
I find myself drawn to the images of the artist Fornasetti's mysterious woman much like others are drawn to the Mona Lisa.  She has an intriguing expression on her face...this pillow would be an unexpected addition to any room (and it's cool because it has a different expression on each side of the pillow).
The Background: Piero Fornasetti was an Italian paintersculptorinterior decorator and engraverHe created more than 11,000 items, many featuring the face of a woman, operatic soprano Lina Cavalieri, as a motif. Fornasetti found her face in a 19th century magazine. “What inspired me to create more than 500 variations on the face of a woman?” asks Italian designer, Piero Fornasetti of himself. “I don’t know,” he admits, “I began to make them and I never stopped.” (Info from Wikipedia.com)

Kartell Louis Ghost Chair
I'm a big fan of Kartell and would love an entire set of these ghost chairs around an old barn style dining room table.  At $410 a pop, a set might not be in the cards any time soon.  One of these "Louis" style chairs would look fab pulled up to a desk or as an occasional chair.

Kartell Bourgie Lamp
Here is more love for Kartell...I must have these lamps!  They are magical.

Jonathan Adler Dora Maar Vase
This creepy-cool number would look amazing with a fresh bouquet of roses or peonies.  Jonathan Adler is not only a great interior designer, he is known for his signature pottery.  (For a more affordable way to own some Adler, check out Jonathan Adler's adorable Dachshund bookends for Barnes and Noble!)

Falling for Florals

Hello wonderful sisters and readers,

Hope you are all well on this beautiful fall day. Like my sisters, I find fall to be one of the best times of the year with the changing leaves and cool crisp weather. I especially love the beginning of fall when there are still flowers peaking out from under fallen leaves and branches. Flowers bring such joy into any living space, outfit, or just to people in general. Once all the flowers are gone for the cooler seasons, it is our duty to carry on the life and beauty that can be found in florals!

Wrap Yourself in Florals

Snuggle up in something like these beautifully printed quilts and pillows from Anthropologie
on a cool, fall day to keep you warm. Love it!

Decorate Yourself in Florals

I love these accessories with a floral flair. They add just a little fun and femininity to any ensemble. And oh my, do I love these shoes! If we are talking Christmas presents here, sisters...I think it's safe to say that these are definitely on my wish list!

Share Your Thoughts with Florals
There is something so special about getting a card in the mail. These days, it is hard to remember that feeling with all of the instant communication found with technology. I think Kate Spade's collection of stationary is so charming and simple. You are sure to brighten anyone's day by letting them know you are thinking of them with these flowers smiling up at them!
One of my favorite things to do on a fall day is to sit outside in between classes on my school's campus and either sketch or journal. Being outside can be so inspiring and calming. This journal from Anthopologie is a tiny inspiration itself!

Decorate Your Home with Florals

I adore this dish set and coaster set from (again, Anthropologie)! They add an extra level of beauty to any kitchen or coffee table. For other amazing designs, check out the "Painterly" theme at Anthro's website.

Whether you are picking out clothing, journals, dishes or simply bringing a bouquet to someone you love, flowers bring life and joy everywhere they go!

Hope these pictures brought some joy to you!
Warm thoughts to you all,
MJ Mini

First-class Flats

As the weather continues to shift between warm and cool, it's easy to know the shoe to turn to for ultimate comfort.

Flats!

I wonder who has the fabulous task of naming shoe designs for Kate Spade? If you are reading this, whoever you are, and you hate your job...let me know! I want in!

Check out a few of my favorites: Fiona, The Jingle, & Nicolina.

(Also available at Macy's or Bloomingdale's online.)

As Mj Mini and I were walking in the Upper West Side last May, I was only looking at the ground in front of me (in a hurry I suppose). I watched each step, trying to dodge the feet of fellow walkers. That's when I spotted them. The most Cinerella-like slippers I had ever seen. I was so mesmerized by the adorable shoes that I almost missed my "celebrity sighting"! It was Elizabeth Hasselbeck from "The View"! Husband, kids, fabulous shoes and all! I still don't know which I was more excited about. The shoes or Elizabeth.

If you want a closer look, keyword Ultragirl Night Sky Crystal Jelly Flats (yes, you read right) or look at Polyvore.com.
I find myself drawn to charming characteristics that give otherwise mundane things that little "extra somethin' special". Check out this flatware that can take any normal dinner party up a notch.

For the lofty dinner table, turn to Kate again! Check out the Kate Spade collection at Macy's.com.
For a comparatively chic (yet less expensive) option, check out the selection at Target.com . I purchased a set from Target a few years ago and I am continually pleased with the compliments I receive when hosting guests.
Referring to my apartment as my "flat" just seems to make it more fashionable. Nate Berkus is my latest design discovery (I know, I am probably a bit behind) and I just love the elements of style he uses in his own flat. Check out the website for his design firm located in Chicago, IL. NateBerkus.com

I hope you enjoyed the tribute to my favorite flats! Have a restful weekend!

Ciao, MM

p.s. Sisters, I'd love those crystal flats for christmas! :)

We're all just taller children!

Hello sisters and readers!

Hope you are all well! This will be a quick post but packed with some sweet tunes! These are some of the amazing artists and music that I am listening to right now. Check them out on youtube or iTunes and see what you think.

Listen to:

Elizabeth and the Catapult is an awesome band straight out of New York City! They have a really cool and artistic sound. All of the songs have great lyrics but some of my favorite songs are Taller Children, Mamma's Boy, Rainiest Day of Summer, and Right Next to You. Visit their official website online... elizabethandthecatapult

"In the end, we're all just taller children. "

I love Gary Go! He is a British singer-songwriter sweeping nations with his insightful and powerful songs. Some of my favorites are Brooklyn, Color My Black and White Days, and Open Arms. Sample some of his songs on iTunes!

"Whatever happened to peace all over...such a strong idea."

I am a huge fan of musical theater and study and perform it constantly. It it one of the greatest joys in my life. I will post many times about musicals, but for my first I chose Company. This show was written by one of the greatest Broadway composers in the history of musical theater, Stephen Sondheim. This show deals with New York City, life challenges, and relationships with others and with yourself. It is incredible. I highly recommend listening to any recording. I especially love this revival recording. Raul Esparza, as well as the entire cast, had stunning performances. To learn more, visit Company online.

''Somebody crowd me with love, somebody force me to care, somebody let me come through, I'll always be there as frightened as you, to help us survive being alive."

Hope you all enjoy this music! Peace to you all!

Fabulous Fall Favorites!

Finally, my favorite season is upon us! (Ok, officially it's two days away, but who's counting?)
I love fall so much!
The crisp bite in the air, the crunchy leaves as you walk outside (in BOOTS!),the hot apple cider, the abundance of
pumpkins at the farmers market, & curling up with a good book under a cozy blanket!
Ah, heaven!

Here are some of my absolute fall favorites!

Perfect for keeping your head covered when partaking in all the fall outdoor-activities.
Check out the many affordable hats at Forever 21.
Call me a pumpkin fanatic if you must, but I just love pumpkins and their versatility!
There are so many styles, shapes, & colors.
They can be centerpieces, room decor, lanterns, kid-entertaining-devices, soup, pie,
... you get the picture!
I found this inspiration board for a fall wedding.
These ideas could easily be used for a halloween or fall party of any kind.

Check out more seasonal inspiration at MarthaStewartWeddings.com

If orange isn't your thing but you still want to feel festive,
check out these gorgeous white pumpkins.
So simple. So cozy.

Maybe you're like me and you have a very special box in your closet labeled "boots".
When the day finally arrives to unpack that box, I get jittery with excitement!
Which boots will go with which pair of tights & leggings or skinny jeans?!
Since it is still warm-enough to go barelegged in Virginia,
I recommend this awesome trend of pairing boots with a simple dress.
Anthropologie always has a great selection and awesome fall spread!

The sweetest wedding party ever!
I fell in love with this website when I discovered this creative image!
Check it out! InspiredByThis.com

I always feel like this time of the year flies by much quicker than the others. Perhaps it is because it's my favorite. It is super important to me that I get outdoors and experience the beauty of the season before it passes by.
My lovely and handsome, southern boyfriend is my favorite accessory to bring along to an outdoor picnic
or a hike in the Shenandoah Valley.
A good glass of wine or a close friend will work too!

(Country Home)

I love dark, bold nail polish on short nails for fall. I am sporting a deep, "midnight magic" as I type.
Go ahead, bring out your dark side!

Check out Chanel.com for some major fall fashion. Or SmudgeStyle.com for some great tips on keeping your fashion & beauty routine healthy & fresh!

I hope you enjoy these fall ideas. I am off to grade papers & drink some cider!
Ciao, ~MM

It's A Man's World

Happy Weekend, Dear Sisters/Readers!
Since some of our followers have mentioned our posts have somewhat of a "girly" bent, I thought it only appropriate to switch it up a bit. This post is
all about the boys. Whether you are a gentleman reading this or a gal looking for good ideas for her man, read on...

"A Way to a Man's Heart is Through His Stomach"
As the weather turns cooler and the days become shorter, nothing says comfort like freshly baked Chicken Pot Pie! I feel like this is a very manly recipe, stuffed full of chicken and veggies in a generous portion. One of my favorite recipes for this man chow is Ina Garten's variety. This takes a few steps, but I promise it's worth it.
Photo from Foodnetwork.com

Get Cool
While you're eating your chicken pot pie, watch the Oscar-winning 1967 classic, Cool Hand Luke. There was never a rebel like Luke...you boys will like watching this gutsy prisoner escape and get recaptured, while the ladies can spend a few hours admiring a young Paul Newman.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Groom & Style
Accessories are very important for a man; a nice watch, the tunes in your ipod, a briefcase, your hair...these all add to the sartorial gentleman. See below for a few of my recs:

Clockwise:
Military "anything" is a big trend right now, and this watch, inspired by the iconic 1940's version, is a nice change from the usual leather/stainless steel varieties.
I purchased this amazing leather satchel for my husband from a boutique (Tanner's Alley Leather Design Studio) in Morgantown, WV. It is handcrafted with genuine English Bridle leather that only gets better with age. Luckily you can order online; they offer custom options as well.
This little hardcover is packed full of fun "man" facts, from how to build a campfire and how to tie a tie to tips for selecting a nice cigar. This makes a great gift, too.
This is a staple in our house and my husband loves it. This hair paste has a light smell and works wonders on taming a wild mane without a greasy look. It also holds like magic. A must have. Period.
The Jukebox
-For the more classic bloke, Chet Baker- The Best of Chet Baker Sings is sooo smooth. Great for your next dinner party or ride home in the car after a long day at the office. It's like taking a dip in a warm pool of water.
-For the hipster, check out Band of Horses, any album. For some of their best, Cease to Begin is a good choice.

Stay classy, gentleman!

'Tis A Gift To Be Simple

As the days seem to get more and more hectic, I find myself gravitating toward simple pleasures that can help me relax and de-stress. Below are some of my favorite meals and tips for a fabulous evening of relaxation!

#1 Drink Miso Soup
In addition to being delicious and warming your entire body, miso soup has many health benefits. It can strengthen your immune system, help with anti-aging, keeping your skin beautiful, and aid in preventing several kinds of cancer. I like to drink a bowl in the evening.

The (simple) preparation
  • Purchase a package of miso paste (I get mine from an oriental market. Make sure it is non-GMO, "not genetically modified" and MSG free, to keep those health benefits up!)
  • Boil water, add tablespoon of miso paste and stir until dissolved.
  • Enjoy!
If you want a little extra "kick"
  • Add firm, cubed tofu (about 1/4 cup per bowl)
  • Add sliced shallots (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Add a splash of soy sauce and a dash of sesame seeds
#2 Enjoy Tomato Caprese Salad
Preparation/Ingredients
  • Slice fresh tomatoes
  • Slice fresh mozerella
  • Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  • Add a handful of basil, dash of salt & pepper & oregano
  • When in doubt, make it look like the picture :)

#3 Meditate
For the past few months, I have been trying to integrate a meditation practice into my daily routine. At first it was a challenge...sitting there "quietly". My mind was racing and I quickly became uncomfortable sitting in the same position. But I kept reading that "meditation will help bring you balance and stress relief, you'll sleep better and look and feel better!"
I persevered.
Finally after searching for my problem, I realized that was it; judgement. I was judging myself so harshly on how meditation should look and feel. I decided to do away with what I thought meditation should be like. It worked! I am now well on my way to 17 minutes of "enlightenment"! I have actually begun to look forward to those early morning minutes just after I rub the sleep from my eyes. I hit my yoga mat, re-close my eyes, and sit. Doing nothing. It's free and it's fabulous.

#4 Watch Mad Men
I am just starting to get into this show (I know, late bloomer) and while the story line is definitely intriguing, it is the fashion that I completely lust after. Those fabrics, the pearls, the trousers! Not to mention the gorgeous cast that accompanies them! (Honestly, could Joan Harris stand up any straighter?) Check it out if you haven't already! Sunday nights,10pm, AMC.

#5 Drink Fresh Juice
I thought I felt a cold coming on earlier this week.I am trying to ween myself off of unnatural medications as much as possible so I didn't want to just pop some cold & simus releif... but I wanted the relief! I bought myself some oranges and grapefruits and pulled out my hand-held juicer from Ikea. This is one of my all-time favorite kitchen accessories and thanks to Special K, one of the best gifts I ever received. At just $5 a pop, it's a lot cheaper than over the counter meds. It lasts much longer too P.S. My sore throat is gone!
Enjoy your weekend sisters, followers and friends! Ciao, MM
